Le Puy-en-Velay is undoubtedly one of France’s most visually striking towns, set amidst the dramatic volcanic landscapes of the Haute-Loire department. The city's skyline is surreal, characterized by steep volcanic plugs rising abruptly from the town center, each crowned with historic monuments. Perched on an 85-meter-high basalt needle is the 10th-century Chapel of Saint-Michel d'Aiguilhe, an architectural marvel reached by climbing 268 steps carved directly into the rock. Nearby, the monumental red statue of Notre-Dame de France watches over the cobbled old town from the top of Rocher Corneille. The UNESCO-listed Le Puy Cathedral serves as the historic starting point of the Via Podiensis, a major pilgrimage route leading to Santiago de Compostela, where modern-day hikers still gather for morning blessings before their journey. Beyond its spiritual heritage, Le Puy is historically famous for intricate bobbin lace making, a delicate craft you can still discover in the winding medieval streets. Food lovers revere the town for the Lentille Verte du Puy, a unique green lentil grown in the surrounding volcanic soil, which is a staple in local rustic gastronomy.
