💡 Tips
- The white reindeer lichen covering the forest floor is extremely fragile; always stay on the marked trails to protect it.
- The area is full of kettle holes (steep, bowl-shaped depressions); be careful near the edges as banks can be unstable.
- In mid-summer, the pine forests can have lots of mosquitoes, so bring a reliable insect repellent.
- Grab a trail map from the visitor centers or spa hotels; the Geopark routes are excellently marked but network is vast.
🍽 Food
Made from locally foraged forest mushrooms, often served in the resort hotel restaurants.
Refresh yourself with drinks made from local lingonberries or blueberries at the wellness cafes.
Available at the main resort hotels, excellent for regaining energy after a long hike in the Geopark.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots

Rokua is a unique geological area in Northern Ostrobothnia and forms the core of Finland's first UNESCO Global Geopark. The landscape is a living laboratory of the last Ice Age, featuring ancient sand dunes, deep kettle holes, and ridge formations. One of its most striking features is the floor of the pine forests, which is covered in a thick, silvery-white carpet of reindeer lichen. Rokua has long been a destination for health and wellbeing, centered around the Rokua Health & Spa, which integrates the healing power of the surrounding nature. The area provides an extensive network of well-marked trails for hiking, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing, making it a year-round outdoor destination. The clear, spring-fed lakes are great for a refreshing swim in summer or ice fishing in winter. Located just an hour's drive from Oulu, Rokua is easily accessible for both day trips and longer stays. The Geopark provides educational insights into how the ice shaped the land, making it a fascinating visit for all ages.
