Vaasa is located on the west coast of Finland along the Gulf of Bothnia and serves as the administrative capital of the Ostrobothnia region. The city was founded in 1606 by King Charles IX of Sweden and named after the Royal House of Vasa. A defining event in its history was the Great Fire of 1852, which led to the entire city being rebuilt seven kilometers to the west, closer to the sea. Today, Vaasa is known as the energy capital of Finland, hosting a significant cluster of companies specializing in renewable energy and power systems. The nearby Kvarken Archipelago is a UNESCO World Heritage site, recognized for the unique post-glacial land uplift phenomenon. As a bilingual city, Vaasa is a vital educational hub for both Finnish and Swedish speakers, housing several universities. The urban layout is characterized by wide boulevards and fire-resistant greenery, a direct result of the meticulous planning after the mid-19th-century disaster.
