Pyhäkoski (Finland)

Weather…

Pyhäkoski was historically one of the most powerful and longest rapids on the Oulujoki River in northern Finland. With a vertical drop of approximately 56 meters over several kilometers, it represented a formidable force of nature deeply rooted in Finnish folklore. In the 1940s, the original dynamics of the rapids were fundamentally altered by the construction of the Pyhäkoski hydroelectric power plant. The power station, designed by the renowned architect Aarne Ervi, is now considered a masterpiece of 20th-century Finnish industrial architecture. Despite the technological development, the surroundings remain scenic and showcase the river's power that shaped the Oulujoki valley over millennia. The region today serves as a significant monument to Finland's post-WWII reconstruction and the early utilization of renewable energy resources.
