Kärsämäki Church (Finland)

Weather…

The current church of Kärsämäki was completed in 1842 and is the work of the renowned architect Carl Ludvig Engel. This building replaced an older 18th-century wooden church that had fallen into disrepair. It is a neoclassical cruciform church, featuring architecture defined by symmetry and clear geometric forms. In addition to the historical Engel church, Kärsämäki is also famous for its modern shingle church (Paakki), constructed in 2004 using traditional 18th-century techniques. The 1842 historical church houses an impressive altarpiece and a valuable pipe organ, enriching the parish's spiritual life. Its location on the banks of the Pyhäjoki River adds exceptional scenic beauty to the site. For over 180 years, the church has served as a central gathering place and stands as an important architectural witness to the spread of Neoclassicism in northern Finland.
