Raate Road Memorial (Finland)

Weather…

The Raate Road in Suomussalmi is one of the most significant battlefields of the Finnish-Soviet Winter War of 1939-1940. In January 1940, Finnish troops led by Colonel Hjalmar Siilasvuo achieved a decisive victory over the numerically superior Soviet 44th Rifle Division. This battle became famous for the successful application of 'motti' tactics, where long enemy columns were split into small units and destroyed. Today, the area serves as a memorial and museum (Raatteen Portti) to remember the victims of both sides. The monumental Winter War monument includes a vast field with thousands of stones symbolizing the fallen soldiers. Raate Road has become a symbol of Finnish defensive resolve and the concept of 'Sisu'. The museum exhibits military hardware, personal items, and documentation illustrating the extreme conditions of Arctic warfare.
