Kuhmo Church (Finland)

Weather…

Kuhmo Church is an imposing wooden structure completed in 1816, designed by the architect Jacob Rijf. The building follows a cruciform layout and features massive timber constructions typical of Finnish ecclesiastical architecture from this era. During the Winter War, Kuhmo was situated directly on the frontline, and the church suffered significant damage from bombings; however, it remained one of the few buildings in the town center to survive. Following the war, it was carefully restored to preserve its original character. The interior is characterized by a simple yet dignified design, with the 1883 altarpiece 'Christ on the Cross' serving as a focal point. The church accommodates approximately 1500 people and stands as an important cultural symbol for the Kainuu region. Its location on a hill makes it a prominent landmark visible from throughout the surrounding area.
