Kittilä, located well above the Arctic Circle in Finnish Lapland, is a premier destination for high-latitude adventure. It is most famous for being home to Levi, Finland's largest and most popular ski resort. Levi features 43 slopes, 27 lifts, and a lively village atmosphere, frequently hosting the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup. The resort gives skiing conditions that often last from October until May. Beyond the slopes, Kittilä is a hub for quintessential Lappish activities. Visitors can enjoy husky and reindeer sledding, snowmobile safaris, and ice fishing. From late September to March, the area is one of the best places in the world to witness the Aurora Borealis. Nearby Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park provides a vast area for hiking and snowshoeing, boasting some of the cleanest air measured on the planet. Cultural highlights include the Särestöniemi Museum, dedicated to the life and works of the famous local artist Reidar Särestöniemi. The region also hosts one of Europe's largest gold mines. Kittilä Airport (KTT) serves as a vital gateway, with many direct flights from European capitals during the winter. Traditional cuisine like sautéed reindeer served with mashed potatoes and lingonberries is a staple in local restaurants.
