Quskuam Complex (Ethiopia)

Weather…

The Quskuam Complex in Gondar was built in the 1730s by Empress Mentewab, the consort of Emperor Bakaffa. The facility is located on the slope of Debre Tsehay Hill and includes a church, a palace, and various outbuildings. Quskuam served as the Empress's private retreat and residence following the death of her husband. The architecture is characterized by fine stonework and decorative reliefs depicting biblical scenes and animals. Despite severe destruction caused by wars and neglect in the 19th and 20th centuries, the massive outer walls and parts of the palace structure have been preserved. Near the church are the tombs of Empress Mentewab and her grandson, Emperor Iyoas I. The complex gives a panoramic view over the city of Gondar and testifies to the power of women at the imperial court during the Gondarine period.
