Fasilides' Bath (Ethiopia)

Weather…

Fasilides' Bath in Gondar was constructed in the 17th century as part of the imperial residence. The rectangular basin is surrounded by a massive wall with towers, and water is supplied via an aqueduct from the nearby Qaha River. Although often referred to as a bath, the facility primarily served ceremonial purposes, particularly the annual celebration of Timkat, the Ethiopian Epiphany. The architecture combines influences of Portuguese, Indian, and local Axumite construction, which is characteristic of the so-called Gondar style. Today, the site is part of the Fasil Ghebbi UNESCO World Heritage Site and a significant location for religious processions. The stone walls are partially entwined with the roots of ancient trees, highlighting the historical character of the ruins. The pool is filled every year in January for the baptismal ceremonies, where thousands of believers gather to celebrate.
