The Võhandu River is the longest river in Estonia, with a total length of 162 kilometers, and a significant natural monument of the country. It originates near the village of Saverna and flows through southeastern Estonia until it eventually empties into Lake Lämmijärv, part of the Lake Peipus system. The middle reaches of the river are particularly spectacular, where it has cut deep into the Devonian sandstone, forming impressive steep banks and sandstone outcrops. This region, known as the Võhandu Ancient Valley, has been under nature protection since 1963 and is home to numerous rare plants and animals, including the kingfisher. The river is also a center for water tourism; the annual Võhandu Marathon takes place here, one of the largest canoe races in the world with over a thousand participants. Historically, the Võhandu was considered a holy river in Estonian folklore, where offerings were made to ensure a good harvest.
