The Haanja Upland in southeastern Estonia is the highest region of the country and the entire Baltic States. Characterized by a hilly moraine landscape formed during the last ice age, the area reaches an elevation of 318 meters above sea level at Suur Munamägi. The landscape is a mosaic of deep valleys, small lakes, and dense forests, making it one of the most pretty parts of Estonia. Due to its elevation, the climate here is somewhat cooler and snowier than in the rest of the country, which is why Haanja is an important center for winter sports. The region is also culturally significant, being part of the historical Võru County, where the local South Estonian language and traditions are still preserved today.
