Karksi Castle Ruins (Estonia)

Weather…

The ruins of Karksi Order Castle perch atop a steep hill in southern Estonia, representing one of the most scenic medieval sites in the region. The initial timber fortress was likely established by the Livonian Order in the 13th century, while the massive stone fortifications were expanded during the 14th and 15th centuries. Due to its proximity to the border, the castle was a frequent target of Lithuanian and Russian raids throughout its history. In 1708, during the Great Northern War, the fortress was finally dismantled by order of Peter the Great and subsequently fell into decline. A notable architectural feature of the site is the St. Peter and Paul's Church, built in 1778 adjacent to the ruins, which is famous for its leaning tower. Today, the castle grounds serve as a venue for cultural festivals and offer sweeping views over the Karksi primeval valley, making it a popular destination for heritage tourism.
