Alam-Pedja Nature Reserve (Estonia)

Weather…

The Alam-Pedja Nature Reserve is one of Estonia's largest and most pristine protected areas, covering approximately 342 square kilometers. Located in central Estonia at the confluence of the Emajõgi, Põltsamaa, and Pedja rivers, it was established in 1994 to safeguard extensive floodplains, bogs, and alluvial forests. The territory is almost entirely uninhabited, allowing natural hydrological processes to shape a landscape characterized by seasonal flooding and shifting riverbeds. These wetlands are of critical importance for numerous endangered bird species, including the Great Snipe and the White-tailed Eagle, which find secure nesting grounds here. The reserve's flora includes rare species of wet meadows and ancient forests that have vanished from much of Western Europe. As a designated Ramsar site, Alam-Pedja is a cornerstone of Northern European biodiversity conservation efforts. Visitors can access the reserve via specific nature trails and observation towers that offer a window into this vast, untamed waterworld without disturbing the delicate balance of the environment.
