Laeva Bog (Estonia)

Weather…

Laeva Bog is an important part of the Alam-Pedja Nature Reserve, one of the largest wilderness areas in Estonia. Located in central Estonia, northwest of the city of Tartu, it is a classic example of an Estonian raised bog with deep peat layers and numerous small bog pools. The formation of the bog began about 10,000 years ago after the retreat of the continental ice sheet, when water collected in hollows and infilling began. Today, Laeva Bog is a sanctuary for many rare animal species, including wolves, lynxes, and various species of eagles, which find handy living conditions in the undisturbed vastness of the protected area. For visitors, there is the Selli-Sillaotsa study trail, which leads safely through the fragile landscape and has an observation tower from which the entire bog can be overlooked. The silence and vastness of the bog offer an intense nature experience, of exceptional beauty especially in autumn when the grasses change color.
