Endla Nature Reserve (Estonia)

Weather…

The Endla Nature Reserve is located in central Estonia and encompasses a sprawling complex of bogs, swamps, and springs that are vital to the regional water table. Established in 1985, the reserve protects approximately 101 square kilometers of terrain shaped by the retreat of glaciers at the end of the last Ice Age. It is particularly renowned for the Männikjärve bog and its numerous karst springs, such as the Oostriku springs, which are among the most voluminous in the country. The flora within the reserve is exceptionally diverse, featuring rare orchid species and carnivorous plants like the sundew that thrive in the nutrient-poor peat soil. As a significant stopover for migratory birds, Endla is a premier destination for birdwatching, especially during the peak migration seasons. A well-maintained network of boardwalks allows visitors to safely navigate the treacherous mire and experience the pristine wilderness of the high bog. The reserve is also designated as a Ramsar site of international importance.
