Kruusa-Rida Ridge (Estonia)

Weather…

Kruusa-Rida Ridge is a classic example of an esker (os), a narrow, elongated ridge of gravel and sand that can stretch for several kilometers through the Estonian landscape. These geological structures were formed in tunnels beneath glacial ice, where meltwater deposited sediments. The name means Gravel Row and accurately describes the linear arrangement of the deposits, which act like an artificially raised dam. Kruusa-Rida Ridge is often flanked by lakes or bogs, making it an important dry hiking corridor and habitat for specialized wildlife species. The vegetation on the ridge is mostly characterized by open pine forests and a rich berry layer, as the sandy soil holds little water. In forestry, the ridge plays an important role as a natural transport route for timber extraction. Today, it is a significant geomorphological monument that impressively documents the dynamics of the decaying continental ice sheet over 11,000 years ago.
