Kuhjavere Plateau (Estonia)

Weather…

The Kuhjavere Plateau is located in Viljandi County in southern Estonia and is an integral part of the Sakala Upland. This geographic formation was created approximately 12,000 years ago during the retreat of the Scandinavian glaciers at the end of the Weichselian glaciation. The landscape is characterized by gentle rolling hills and fertile plains that are predominantly used for agriculture and forestry. Geologically, the bedrock consists of Devonian sandstone, which is overlain by thick layers of Pleistocene glacial till and moraine materials. The region serves as an important ecological corridor between the forested areas of Sakala and the adjacent Soomaa National Park lowlands. Historically, the area has been settled since the Middle Ages, with the village of Kuhjavere first mentioned in 1583 in Polish land revision records. Today, the plateau represents a classic Estonian cultural landscape with scattered farmsteads and significant biodiversity in the remaining woodland patches.
