Kruusa-Org Valley (Estonia)

Weather…

The Kruusa-Org Valley is a prominent example of a glacial trough valley in central Estonia, owing its current form to the immense meltwater flows at the end of the Weichselian glaciation. The depression extends over a length of approximately 1.5 kilometers and reaches depths of up to 30 meters, with the gravelly slopes that give the valley its name ('Kruusa' means gravel) being characteristic of its geological makeup. During the post-glacial period, bogs and wetlands formed on the flat valley floor, which today serve as vital natural water reservoirs and filtration systems. The vegetation primarily consists of dense mixed forests that provide a safe haven for numerous protected bird species. Several springs flowing year-round feed the ecosystem, making the valley an animated and stable habitat even during dry seasons. For hikers and geologists, the valley has an excellent insight into the erosional processes that have shaped the Estonian landscape over millennia. Today, the area is recognized as a local natural monument, frequently visited for scientific research into post-glacial sedimentary deposits and ecological conservation.
