Tori St. George's Church, located on the scenic banks of the Pärnu River, is officially recognized as the Memorial Church of Estonian Soldiers and holds a significant place in the nation's heart. The original church was built between 1852 and 1854, but it was reduced to ruins in 1944 when retreating German troops set it ablaze during World War II. For decades, only the scorched stone walls remained until a grassroots restoration movement began in 1989, leading to its rededication in 1990 as a sanctuary for the armed forces. The interior is characterized by numerous memorial plaques honoring those who fell in various conflicts, and the church frequently hosts state military ceremonies and oaths of enlistment. Outside, a striking monument of St. George slaying the dragon serves as a symbol of the bravery and resilience of Estonian defenders throughout history. The architecture successfully blends the historic 19th-century masonry with contemporary timber roofing, creating a space of both historical weight and spiritual peace. It stands today as a powerful emblem of national survival and the enduring quest for Estonian independence.
