Lake Võrtsjärv (Estonia)

Weather…

Lake Võrtsjärv is the largest internal lake in Estonia, situated in the southern part of the country between the counties of Viljandi and Tartu. Covering an area of about 270 square kilometers, it is a shallow freshwater body with an average depth of only 2.8 meters, which makes it susceptible to rapid temperature changes and high biological productivity. The lake was formed in a post-glacial depression and is currently fed by several rivers, including the Väike Emajõgi and Õhne, while its only outlet is the Emajõgi River flowing towards Lake Peipus. The shoreline is predominantly low and marshy, characterized by extensive reed beds that provide a good nesting ground for diverse migratory birds. Economically, Lake Võrtsjärv is renowned for its commercial fishing industry, particularly for European eel and pike-perch, which are significant to the local culinary heritage. In recent years, the lake has become a popular hub for sustainable tourism and sailing, featuring traditional wooden sailboats known as 'kale' boats that offer a unique glimpse into the region's maritime traditions and serene natural beauty.
