Getting there
Reaching the hills typically requires a 4x4 vehicle journey from Bata or Evinayong over rough, unpaved logging or rural roads. The final approach is usually completed on foot through dense forest.
Best season
The short dry seasons (typically December to February and July to August) are highly recommended. Heavy equatorial rains during the rest of the year make access roads incredibly muddy and impassable.
Terrain & paths
The environment consists of densely forested, steep hills rising abruptly from the surrounding jungle basin. Trails are almost nonexistent, requiring navigation through thick, humid undergrowth.
What to bring
Heavy-duty jungle boots, long tough trousers, and long sleeves are mandatory to protect against insects and thorny plants. A machete for clearing paths and abundant water supplies are strictly necessary.
Parking
There are no formal parking lots; vehicles are typically left at the nearest rural village or logging camp. It is standard practice to arrange security with local village elders.
Safety
High humidity and heat can cause rapid exhaustion. The area is extremely remote, so traveling with a knowledgeable local guide and carrying a comprehensive first-aid kit is essential.
Time needed
A basic expedition to explore the base or ascend one of the hills takes a full, exhausting day. More extensive exploration of multiple peaks requires planning a multi-day jungle trek.
