San Cristóbal is the easternmost island of the Galapagos Archipelago and one of the oldest in the group geologically. It holds historical significance as the first location where Charles Darwin landed in 1835 to begin his seminal observations. Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, the administrative capital of the Galapagos Province, is located on the island's southwestern coast and is famous for its large resident sea lion colony, which often occupies the town's public spaces. The island features the only permanent freshwater source in the entire archipelago, Laguna El Junco, situated within a volcanic crater in the highlands. Offshore, the towering Kicker Rock (León Dormido) rises dramatically from the sea, serving as a remnant of a tuff cone and a premier site for diving and snorkeling. San Cristóbal also hosts an Interpretation Center that provides detailed insights into the islands' natural and human history. Current environmental management focuses on protecting coastal habitats and controlling invasive flora in the highlands.

Getting there

The island has its own airport with direct connections from the mainland, making it one of the easiest Galapagos destinations to access. Many natural sites are within walking distance from the main town, while others require a short boat or taxi ride.

Best season

Visits are generally rewarding year-round, with the warm, wet season from January to May offering calm seas and lush greenery. The cooler, dry season from June to December brings richer marine life, though water temperatures can be quite brisk.

Terrain & paths

The landscape features a diverse mix of volcanic rock formations, sandy coves favored by sea lions, and elevated inland areas with denser vegetation. Trails range from paved boardwalks near the town to uneven volcanic paths further afield.

What to bring

Comfortable walking shoes with good grip are essential for traversing the volcanic trails, alongside lightweight layers for shifting weather. Bring plenty of sun protection, a reusable water bottle, and snorkeling gear if you prefer using your own.

Parking

Within the main town, walking or cycling is the norm, and parking is rarely a concern for visitors as most rely on local taxis or scheduled tours. For those renting bikes, informal parking is generally available near trailheads and beaches.

It is strictly required to maintain a safe and respectful distance from all wildlife, particularly the ubiquitous sea lions. Stick to marked trails to protect the fragile ecosystem and follow all guidelines set by the national park authorities.

Many travelers dedicate at least three to four days to explore the island's unique wildlife sites, highlands, and surrounding marine areas. A day is usually sufficient for seeing the town's immediate coastline and visitor center.
