Puerto Villamil
Puerto Villamil is a breathtakingly tranquil village located on the southeastern edge of Isabela Island, the largest in the Galápagos archipelago. Characterized by its unpaved, white-sand streets and laid-back Caribbean vibe, it provides an excellent escape for travelers seeking pristine nature away from the crowds. The town is famous for its long, spectacular beaches backed by lagoons teeming with animated pink flamingos and migratory birds. Key attractions include hiking the massive Sierra Negra volcano caldera, snorkeling with penguins at Las Tintoreras, and biking to the historic Wall of Tears built by former penal colony prisoners. Local dining is modest but features exceptionally fresh seafood like lobster and octopus ceviche. Getting to Puerto Villamil requires a scenic two-hour speedboat ride from Puerto Ayora (Santa Cruz). The destination is wonderful year-round, offering distinct seasonal wildlife behaviors depending on the time of year you choose to explore.
