Cerro Colorado Tortoise Centre (Ecuador)

Weather…

The Cerro Colorado Tortoise Centre, officially known as Galapaguera de Cerro Colorado, is located in the southeastern part of San Cristóbal Island in the Galápagos archipelago. It was inaugurated in 2002 by the Galápagos National Park Service with the primary mission of protecting and restoring the population of the island's endemic giant tortoise species, Chelonoidis chathamensis. The facility covers approximately 12 hectares of dry forest terrain, where tortoises live in conditions that closely resemble their natural wild habitat. Visitors can observe the various life stages of these ancient reptiles, from the incubation center and nurseries for hatchlings to the massive adults that roam freely along the interpretive trails. Beyond species conservation, the center serves as a hub for environmental education and the protection of local flora, including endemic plants like the Galápagos rock purslane. This conservation effort is crucial for the island's ecological health, as the tortoises play a fundamental role as seed dispersers throughout the landscape.

📜
Etiquette
Do not touch or feed the giant tortoises - they have sensitive digestion. Stay on trails to protect the fragile Galapagos vegetation.
