Isabela is the largest island in the Galapagos Archipelago, accounting for more than half of the total land area of the group. Geologically relatively young, it was formed by the merging of six shield volcanoes, five of which, Wolf, Darwin, Alcedo, Sierra Negra, and Cerro Azul, remain active today. The island is famous for its distinctive seahorse shape and hosts an extraordinary variety of wildlife, including more wild giant tortoises than all other islands combined. Notably, it is home to the Galapagos penguin, the only penguin species that lives north of the Equator. Isabela's coastal waters are nutrient-rich, providing well-suited conditions for marine iguanas, sea lions, and a vast array of fish species. Puerto Villamil, the main settlement in the south, retains its rustic charm and serves as a gateway for excursions into the stark volcanic landscapes. Protecting endemic species from invasive threats remains the primary ecological focus on Isabela.

Getting there

Reaching the island typically requires a speed boat ride or a short inter-island flight from nearby Santa Cruz. Most visitors arrive at the main dock in Puerto Villamil, which serves as the local hub.

The warmer, wetter season from January to May is often handy for snorkeling in calmer waters. The cooler, drier months generally bring more nutrient-rich currents, increasing marine wildlife activity.

The landscape is characterized by rugged volcanic rock formations, expansive ash fields, and pristine sandy beaches. Inland trails can be uneven and sharp, requiring careful footing over the dried lava.

Sturdy, closed-toe walking shoes are absolutely essential for navigating the abrasive volcanic rock trails. High-factor reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, and a reusable water bottle are mandatory every day.

Vehicles are heavily restricted on the island, and visitors rely almost entirely on walking or renting bicycles. There is no need for traditional parking as transportation is typically arranged by guides.
