Weather…

Santiago Island, also referred to as San Salvador or James Island, is a centrally located island in the Galapagos known for its remarkable geological features. The island was formed by two overlapping shield volcanoes reaching an elevation of 907 meters, creating a landscape of diverse volcanic terrain. One of its most famous sites is Sullivan Bay, where visitors can walk across a vast field of pahoehoe lava that solidified following an eruption in 1897. Historically, the island gained significance when Charles Darwin spent several weeks exploring its interior in 1835 during the HMS Beagle expedition. In the early 20th century, a small-scale salt mining operation existed near Puerto Egas, though the harsh conditions eventually led to its abandonment, leaving behind ruins for modern explorers. Following a successful conservation effort that concluded in 2006, invasive species like goats and pigs were eradicated, allowing the native flora and fauna to thrive once again. Today, Santiago is a vital habitat for Galapagos fur seals, Darwin's finches, and land iguanas, making it a key destination for scientific study and ecological tourism.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
As an uninhabited and highly protected reserve, visitors only arrive via organized, pre-approved multi-day cruise itineraries. Small motorized dinghies ferry passengers from the anchored cruise ships directly onto the rugged landing sites.
📅
Best season
December to May presents warmer waters that are convenient for snorkeling alongside sea lions. The cooler dry season from June to November brings richer marine nutrients, increasing the visibility of larger pelagic species.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The coastal trails consist of spectacular, jagged black lava flows and rough volcanic ash paths. The footing can be extremely abrasive, uneven, and challenging, requiring careful steps as you navigate around lounging marine iguanas.
🎒
What to bring
Thick-soled, enclosed hiking shoes are absolutely critical to protect feet from the sharp lava rock. High-quality sunscreen, a hat with a chin strap for coastal winds, and snorkeling gear are also highly recommended essentials.
🅿️
Parking
Since the entire island is completely devoid of infrastructure, motorized vehicles, or roads, parking is entirely non-applicable. All logistics are handled aboard your designated liveaboard cruise ship.
⚠️
Safety
The unforgiving, razor-sharp lava requires constant attention to where you step to avoid severe abrasions. Visitors must strictly trail their certified naturalist guide and refrain from ever startling the remarkably tame local wildlife.
⏱️
Time needed
Landings are carefully timed to avoid the harshest midday sun and typically consist of a two to three-hour guided walk. These excursions are frequently paired with an hour-long coastal snorkeling session directly from the boats.
