Charles Darwin Research Station (Ecuador)

Weather…

The Charles Darwin Research Station (CDRS) on Santa Cruz Island is the scientific headquarters of the Galápagos Islands, operated by the Charles Darwin Foundation. Established in 1959, coinciding with the centenary of the publication of 'The Origin of Species,' the station is dedicated to the conservation of the archipelago's unique flora and fauna. A cornerstone of its work is the giant tortoise captive breeding and rearing program, which protects hatchlings until they are large enough to be repatriated to their home islands. The station gained global fame as the residence of 'Lonesome George,' the last known Pinta Island tortoise, who lived here until his death in 2012. Beyond tortoises, international scientists conduct critical research on marine iguanas, land iguanas, and the mitigation of invasive species. The visitor center provides comprehensive exhibits on evolutionary theory and modern environmental challenges. The CDRS works in close partnership with the Galápagos National Park to ensure the sustainable management of this UNESCO World Heritage site.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The station is open year-round, but the dry season from June to November has the best conditions for observing giant tortoises. In the rainy season, paths are often damp but vegetation is greener.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning tortoises are most active and leave their shelters. Late morning they retreat to shade, making viewing harder.
📜
Etiquette
Do not touch the tortoises and always stay on marked paths. Feeding the animals is strictly prohibited; keep distance from enclosures.
🎒
What to bring
Sun hat, comfortable shoes, and plenty of water are essential. A camera with zoom is good for photographing tortoises from a safe distance.
🧭
Getting there
The station is on Santa Cruz island and reachable by ferry from Baltra. Buses run from the port to Puerto Ayora, then a short walk leads to the station.
🦌
What to expect
Tortoises move slowly - take your time to watch their natural behaviour. The station can be busy, especially when cruise ships dock.
