Limoncocha Biological Reserve (Ecuador)

Weather…

The Limoncocha Biological Reserve is located in the Sucumbíos province in the Ecuadorian Amazon, covering approximately 4,613 hectares. Established in 1985, the reserve is centered around Lake Limoncocha, an oxbow lake formed from a former bend of the Napo River. The area is internationally recognized as a birdwatcher's paradise, boasting over 450 species within a relatively small area, one of the highest concentrations in the world. A major highlight of the reserve is its significant population of black caimans, which are frequently spotted during night expeditions. The flora consists of primary and secondary tropical rainforests, as well as extensive wetlands and swamp forests. The reserve is also home to the Kichwa community of Limoncocha, who manage sustainable ecotourism activities. As a designated Ramsar site, it plays a vital role in protecting the biodiversity of Amazonian freshwater ecosystems.
