Best season
The best time to visit Jaragua National Park is the dry season from December to April. Temperatures are more pleasant and trails more passable. In the rainy season (May-November) heavy rains can affect access roads.
Best time of day
Early morning is good to see iguanas basking on rocks. Late afternoon also sees activity. They spend the hot midday hours mostly in shade.
Etiquette
Do not approach or feed the iguanas. Stay on trails to protect fragile dry forest vegetation. Photography without flash is recommended.
What to bring
Sturdy footwear and long pants protect against thorns and insects. Binoculars and camera are helpful. Plenty of water and sun protection are essential.
Getting there
Jaragua National Park is in the far southwest of the Dominican Republic, near the Haiti border. Best reached by 4x4 vehicle from Barahona city. Guided tours are available.
