The Mabla Mountains are located in northern Djibouti, straddling the border between the Tadjoura and Obock regions. Reaching an altitude of 1,370 meters at their highest point, they form the second-largest mountain range in the country after the Goda Mountains. The terrain is characterized by steep slopes and deep ravines, formed through millions of years of tectonic activity and erosion. Getting there
The mountain range is accessible via rough tracks leading from coastal towns in northern Djibouti. Hiring a 4x4 vehicle and a local driver is generally the standard approach.
Best season
Plan your visit between November and March when temperatures are manageable. The intense heat during the summer months makes trekking in these mountains incredibly harsh.
Terrain & paths
Expect rugged slopes, loose rocks, and sparse trails interspersed with areas of rich flora. The ascents can be steep, demanding stamina and careful footing on the rocky surfaces.
What to bring
Proper trekking shoes with strong ankle support are necessary. Sunblock, a wide-brimmed hat, navigation tools, and a large supply of drinking water are absolutely crucial.

Parking is generally done in the small settlements at the foot of the mountains. Consult with your local guide on where to safely leave vehicles before starting the ascent.
Safety
Medical facilities are virtually non-existent in this remote area, so hike conservatively. Always trek with someone who knows the area well to avoid getting lost in the heat.
