Obock Colonial Residency (Djibouti)

Weather…

The colonial residency of Obock marks the beginning of the French presence in the Horn of Africa region. After the French consul Léonce Lagarde signed the treaty with local sultans in 1884, Obock became the territory's first administrative center. The residency building, perched on a rise overlooking the Gulf of Aden, served as the governor's seat and a strategic base for monitoring shipping lanes to the Suez Canal. Its architecture is characterized by high ceilings, expansive verandas, and thick walls designed to provide relief from the extreme local heat. Although the capital was relocated to Djibouti City in 1892, Obock remained a significant outpost. Today, the ruins of the residency stand as a compelling testament to colonial history and a key site for understanding Djibouti's geopolitical evolution in the late 19th century.
