Nysø Manor (Denmark)

Weather…

Nysø Manor on the island of Zealand is an outstanding example of Dutch Baroque architecture in Denmark. Built between 1671 and 1673 for the courtier Jens Lassen, it was the first manor house in the country to be constructed in this specific style, featuring red brickwork and sandstone decorations. Nysø gained national fame in the 19th century as a gathering place for the Danish cultural elite under the patronage of the Stampe family. A particularly close connection was formed with the world-renowned sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen, who stayed here frequently during the 1830s and had his own studio on the estate. In this creative environment, he produced several of his significant late works, including busts and plaster models. Today, a small museum on the manor grounds displays a collection of Thorvaldsen's original models and sketches. The architecture is notable for its steep hipped roof and grand ornamental portal. While the manor remains privately owned, the surrounding park and the Thorvaldsen collection are open to the public.
