Liselund Castle (Denmark)

Weather…

Liselund Castle on the island of Møn is one of Denmark's best-preserved examples of a Romantic landscape garden. The estate was established in the late 18th century by Antoine de la Calmette, the governor of Møn, for his wife Elisabeth, after whom it is named. The centerpiece is the "Old Castle," a thatched-roof Neoclassical manor built in 1792 according to plans by Andreas Kirkerup. The surrounding park was designed in the style of an English garden, featuring artificial hills, lakes, and exotic structures like a Chinese pavilion and a Swiss cottage. In 1887, a larger "New Castle" in the Historicist style was added as the original house had become too small for the family. Liselund embodies the ideals of the Enlightenment and the yearning for a return to nature. Today, the Old Castle is managed as part of the National Museum of Denmark and is open to the public for guided tours.
