Stevns Klint (Denmark)

Weather…

Stevns Klint stretches 15 kilometers along the coast of Zealand, with white chalk cliffs reaching heights of up to 41 meters. Geologically, it is world-renowned for the 'fish clay' layer, a thin dark band that marks the K-Pg boundary. This layer provides scientific evidence of the asteroid impact 66 million years ago that led to the mass extinction of the dinosaurs, making it a key site for understanding Earth's past. The most dramatic sight is the Højerup Old Church, built around 1250. In 1928, the church's chancel collapsed into the sea due to coastal erosion; today, the remaining nave stands safely at the very edge of the cliff. Visitors can walk the Stevns Klint Sti, a scenic trail along the cliff edge, or visit the Stevnsfort Cold War Museum nearby, which features underground tunnels carved directly into the chalk rock. Accessible in about an hour from Copenhagen, Stevns Klint gives a mix of natural beauty, tragic architectural history, and scientific wonder. The best time to visit is during the warmer months from May to September, when the chalk glows brightly against the blue Baltic Sea. The local geology museum in Rødvig provides excellent context for the fossils and formations found along the shore.
