Bornholm Nature (Denmark)

Weather…

The nature of Bornholm Island holds a unique position in Denmark as the only region in the country featuring granite rock formations. This geological peculiarity is most prominent in the north at Hammerknuden, where steep cliffs drop sharply into the Baltic Sea. In the island's interior, Almindingen covers one of Denmark's largest contiguous forest areas, known for its deep rift valleys and marshes. Since 2012, Bornholm has been home to a small population of European bison, introduced as part of a conservation project within a fenced area of Almindingen. The southern coast at Dueodde provides a sharp contrast to the rocky north with its extremely fine quartz sand beaches. Due to its isolated location in the Baltic Sea, Bornholm has developed specific ecological conditions that favor rare plant and animal species. The island also serves as a critical stopover for millions of migratory birds on their journey between Scandinavia and Central Europe.
