Bornholm Bakke (Denmark)

Weather…

The relief of Bornholm is fundamentally different from the rest of Denmark, as the island rests on a massive granite basement. This leads to a dramatic topography featuring steep cliffs on the northern coast and rolling hills in the interior. The highest point on the island is Rytterknægten in the Almindingen forest, reaching an elevation of 162 meters. Geologically, Bornholm serves as a window into the ancient Scandinavian crystalline bedrock, with granite often exposed directly at the surface. In the south of the island, the relief transitions into flatter sandstone plains, leading to the famous white sandy beaches of Dueodde. During the Ice Age, glaciers scoured the landscape, creating characteristic rounded rock formations known as 'roche moutonnée' and leaving glacial striae on the stone surfaces. The ruggedness of the coastline provided well-suited sites for defensive structures like Hammershus Castle. The relief dictates not only agricultural practices, concentrated in fertile inland basins, but also the tourism industry, which is drawn to the unique rocky scenery. Bornholm is the only part of Denmark with a genuine rocky relief.
