Port of Kalemie (Congo - Kinshasa)

Weather…

The Port of Kalemie is located on the western shore of Lake Tanganyika in the Tanganyika Province and serves as the Democratic Republic of the Congo's primary gateway to East Africa. Its location provides a direct link to the Port of Kigoma in Tanzania, from where goods can reach the Indian Ocean via the Tanzanian railway network. Kalemie is also the terminus of a major SNCC railway line, connecting the eastern part of the country with the mining districts of Katanga. The port features quays for cargo vessels and passenger ferries that traverse the lake. In recent years, the port has undergone extensive rehabilitation with support from the European Union and the World Bank to address siltation and increase handling capacity. As a regional commercial hub, Kalemie is vital for the supply of foodstuffs and industrial goods, as well as the export of agricultural products. The strategic importance of the port is underscored by its position at an altitude of 770 meters on one of the deepest lakes in the world.
