Mahale Mountains National Park is one of the most spectacular and remote parks in all of Africa. Located on the shores of crystal-clear Lake Tanganyika, it is dominated by the mist-covered peaks of the Mahale Mountains. The main attraction is the world's largest population of wild chimpanzees, living in the dense mountain rainforests and observable during guided trekking tours. What makes Mahale so special is the complete lack of roads. The park is accessible only by boat or light aircraft, and all exploration is done on foot. After a rewarding hike to find the primates, visitors can relax on the white sandy beaches of the lake or swim, snorkel, and fish in the clear water. Accommodations in the park are among the most exclusive in the country, often providing sweeping views over the lake. Culinarially, guests are usually treated to fresh fish from Lake Tanganyika combined with tropical fruits. The atmosphere is one of absolute silence and seclusion. The best time for chimpanzee trekking is the dry season from May to October, as the animals tend to stay in the lower forest regions then. The rainy season features lush greenery and dramatic cloud formations over the lake, but makes the mountain hikes significantly more challenging.
