Tshimbulu is a town in the Kasaï-Central Province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, functioning as a vital railway junction in the country's southern transport corridor. The town is situated on the rail line connecting the provincial capital of Kananga with Mwene-Ditu, serving as an essential node for the distribution of agricultural and industrial goods. Historically a peaceful trading center, Tshimbulu became a focal point of intense violence in 2017 during the Kamwina Nsapu insurgency. The clashes between state security forces and local militia resulted in significant casualties and the discovery of multiple mass graves in the vicinity, sparking international human rights investigations. Geographically, the town is set in a rolling savannah landscape, where the climate supports the cultivation of staples like maize and legumes. The local economy is tied to the railway's operation and small-scale farming. The inhabitants are primarily of the Luba ethnic group, and today the town's social fabric is defined by post-conflict recovery and reconciliation efforts following the trauma of the late 2010s civil unrest.
