Historical Luluabourg, now known as Kananga, was founded in 1884 by the explorer Hermann von Wissmann on the banks of the Lulua River. Originally established as a post for the International Association of the Congo, it rapidly evolved into the administrative and commercial heart of the Kasai region. A pivotal moment occurred in 1944 with the Luluabourg Mutiny, where Congolese soldiers rose up against colonial military conditions, signaling early nationalist sentiments. Post-independence, the city hosted the 1964 constitutional convention, leading to the adoption of the first permanent constitution of the DR Congo, often referred to as the Luluabourg Constitution. The city's layout still reflects colonial urban planning, featuring distinct commercial districts and significant mid-century modernist architecture. As a major junction on the BCK railway line (now SNCC), Kananga serves as a strategic link between the Katanga mines and the Atlantic port of Matadi. Today, it stands as the capital of Kasaï-Central province, remaining a spirited cultural hub with deep political and historical significance.
