Garamba National Park, located in the northeastern corner of the Democratic Republic of Congo, is a panoramic wilderness of immense ecological importance. Established in 1938, it is one of the oldest national parks in Africa and a designated UNESCO World Heritage site. The park is characterized by a dramatic transition from endless savannahs and grasslands in the south to dense gallery forests in the north, creating a diverse habitat that supports a wide range of iconic African wildlife. Historically famous for being the last stronghold of the Northern white rhinoceros in the wild, today Garamba focuses heavily on the conservation of its remaining elephant herds, the endemic Congolese giraffe (Kordofan giraffe), hippos, and lions. The park's management has implemented strict anti-poaching measures, making wildlife viewing a rewarding and unique experience. Visitors can embark on guided safaris across the vast plains, feeling an unparalleled sense of isolation and raw adventure. Getting to Garamba requires determination, typically involving chartered flights from Entebbe, Uganda, or Kinshasa, as road access is extremely challenging. The best time to visit is during the dry season, from December to March, when the grasses are lower, making wildlife spotting easier and ensuring the dirt airstrips and tracks are usable.
