White Mountain Battlefield (Czech Republic)

Weather…

The White Mountain Battlefield (Bílá hora), located on the outskirts of Prague, is the site of one of the most significant turning points in Czech and European history. On November 8, 1620, a brief but decisive battle occurred here that profoundly shaped the outcome of the Thirty Years' War. The Catholic League forces of Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand II defeated the Protestant army of the Bohemian Estates. This defeat effectively ended the Bohemian Revolt and led to nearly 300 years of Habsburg rule over the Czech lands, accompanied by forced re-Catholicization. Today, a modest monument stands at the center of the field to commemorate the fallen soldiers from both sides. Nearby, the Baroque Monastery of the Virgin Mary of Victory was built to celebrate the Catholic triumph. The site now serves as a public park and a place of reflection, with historical plaques detailing the events that marked the end of Bohemian political independence for centuries.
