Vyšehrad (Czech Republic)

Weather…

Vyšehrad, the legendary 'upper castle' of Prague, stands on a rocky promontory overlooking the Vltava River and is considered a foundational site of the Czech nation. Founded in the 10th century, it served as a royal residence for Bohemian dukes and kings during the 11th century before the focus shifted to Prague Castle. The fortress's current appearance is defined by its massive Baroque brick walls, constructed during the 17th century when it was converted into a military stronghold. At its heart lies the Basilica of St. Peter and Paul, famous for its twin neo-Gothic towers and exquisite Art Nouveau interior. Adjacent to the basilica is the Vyšehrad Cemetery, which includes the Slavín Pantheon, the final resting place of distinguished Czech figures such as Antonín Dvořák and Bedřich Smetana. Vyšehrad is also steeped in myth, most notably the legend of the horse Šemík jumping from the cliffs. Today, the area is a peaceful park offering respite from the city's crowds and dramatic panoramic views of Prague.
