💡 Tips
- The Cistercian monastery library is a must-see, but check the guided tour schedule in advance as independent visits are restricted.
- The Vltava river starts its navigable section here; expect many canoeists and rafters during the summer months.
- Parking near the monastery can be crowded in July and August; consider parking closer to the main square and walking up.
- For a scenic hike, follow the yellow trail along the Wolfgang waterfalls (Wolfgangovy vodopády).
- Bring some cash, as smaller riverside refreshment stalls catering to boaters might not accept cards.
🍽 Food
Try local trout from the Vltava river, often served at riverside restaurants with boiled potatoes.
Enjoy a local craft beer; the monastery itself has a historic brewing tradition being revived by a local microbrewery.
Look for a classic Czech pub near the main square serving authentic roast pork with dumplings and cabbage.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
The monastery shop features religious items, local literature, and sometimes locally produced abbey products.

Vyšší Brod is a historic town in the South Bohemian Region, located directly on the border with Austria. It is internationally renowned for the Vyšší Brod Cistercian Monastery, founded in 1259 by Wok von Rosenberg, which remains one of Bohemia's most significant spiritual centers. The monastery complex houses a magnificent library and the famous 'Vyšší Brod Madonna' painting. Situated on the upper reaches of the Vltava River, the town serves as the traditional starting point for river rafting and canoeing trips, bringing a lively tourist atmosphere during the summer months. Other notable landmarks include the parish Church of St. Bartholomew and the Postal Museum, located in the former abbey building. Geographically, the southernmost point of the Czech Republic is situated within the town's municipality near Mount Luč.
