Havlíčkův Brod is a historical town on the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands, stretching along the Sázava river. It was founded in the 13th century as a mining town under the name Smilův Brod, later becoming known as Deutschbrod due to the settlement of German miners. Its current name was adopted in 1945 in honor of the Czech writer and journalist Karel Havlíček Borovský, who lived and worked here. The historical town center is a monument zone, featuring a main square lined with Renaissance and Baroque houses. Key landmarks include the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, which possesses one of the oldest bell towers in the Czech Republic, and the Štáfl House, a valuable late-Gothic half-timbered building. Today, the town serves as a major transport hub and a center for the food and machinery industries, while maintaining its cultural significance as the birthplace of figures such as the composer Johann Stamitz.
