Vysoké Mýto, or Hohenmauth, is a beautiful historical town in the Pardubice Region of the Czech Republic. Founded in the 13th century by King Přemysl Otakar II, it was an important royal town. Its most notable feature is the vast Přemysl Otakar II Square, the largest square-shaped main square in the country, lined with characterful arcaded houses. The town's medieval atmosphere is enhanced by the well-preserved remnants of its town fortifications, including the impressive Prague Gate and Litomyšl Gate. The town has a unique industrial heritage. It was home to Carrosserie Sodomka, a renowned coachbuilder that produced luxury car bodies. This tradition is continued today by Iveco Bus Czech Republic, one of the largest bus manufacturers in Europe. The Museum of Czech Coachbuilding in the town chronicles this fascinating history. Other points of interest include the Gothic Church of St. Lawrence and the lookout tower in the old town hall, which provides panoramic views of the town and its surroundings. Strategically located between Prague and Brno, Vysoké Mýto is easily accessible by train or car. The town makes an excellent base for exploring Eastern Bohemia, including the UNESCO-listed Litomyšl Castle, just a short drive away. The best time to visit is from spring to autumn, when the weather is well-suited for strolling through the historic streets and exploring the nearby countryside.
