Kunětická hora Castle (Czech Republic)

Weather…

Kunětická hora Castle, perched on a distinctive basalt cone near Pardubice, is a prime example of late Gothic fortification architecture. The site's strategic location was used since prehistoric times, but the current fortress dates back to the reconstruction by Diviš Bořek of Miletínek in 1421. Its golden age arrived under the Pernštejn family at the end of the 15th century, when they expanded it into a massive stronghold with state-of-the-art defense systems. During the Thirty Years' War in 1645, Swedish troops heavily damaged the complex, which then fell into decay, further worsened by quarrying at the base of the hill. In the early 20th century, the Pardubice Museum Association saved the ruins, and renovation works began under the guidance of architect Dušan Jurkovič. Today, the castle is a beloved cultural landmark, known for its iconic silhouette and its deep links to the Pernštejn regional history.
