Chrudim is a significant district town in the Pardubice Region, situated on the Chrudimka River at the edge of the Iron Mountains. First mentioned in the 11th century, it was officially established as a royal town by King Ottokar II of Bohemia in 1263. The historic town center is a protected urban monument zone, featuring the Gothic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and numerous Renaissance and Baroque townhouses. The town is internationally renowned for its long-standing tradition of puppetry, which is showcased in the Museum of Puppet Culture and is part of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Historically, Chrudim was an essential administrative and economic center with a strong tradition in milling and machinery industries. Today, it serves as a cultural hub and a gateway to the Iron Mountains, preserving its medieval layout and significant portions of its city walls. The town also hosts the prestigious Loutkářská Chrudim puppetry festival, which has been held annually since 1951.
