Velvary is a royal town in the Central Bohemian Region, located northwest of Prague. First mentioned in records in 1282, it was elevated to town status by King Vladislaus II Jagiello in 1482. Its most iconic landmark is the Prague Gate (Pražská brána), the sole survivor of the original four city gates, constructed in the late 15th century. A well-known local legend claims that Velvary citizens sent hard-boiled eggs to Prague to be mixed into the mortar of Charles Bridge, a story that remains a humorous part of the town's identity. The Church of St. Catherine dominates the central square, showcasing a blend of Gothic and Baroque architectural styles. Historically, Velvary served as a crucial junction on the trade route between Prague and Saxony. The town has meticulously preserved its historical ambiance and currently serves as a regional center for education and cultural activities.
